5 Reasons to Attend the 2019 Birmingham Independent Insurance Agents’ Gala

The BIIA Gala is two weeks away and we are very excited about this year’s event! We are excited to see everyone and have a great evening as we raise funds for the American Heart Association and the March of Dimes. If you are debating whether to attend, here are five reasons why you should join us!

A Fun Evening Out on the Town

The BIIA Gala is a night filled with fun. The evening starts with drinks and dinner. During this time, the DJ will be energizing the festive atmosphere while you peruse and bid on the many silent auction items. Then, it’s time to enjoy some casino style games including Black Jack, Texas Holdem Poker, roulette, slots, and craps. Don’t know how to play? Not to worry! We hand you the fake money to gamble with, and the dealers help you understand the rules. This is the perfect time to learn a new game or to sharpen your skills!

New Venue with Amazing Views of Downtown Birmingham

Every few years, we change the venue to showcase more of Birmingham. This year, the event will be held at The Club. This amazing venue sits atop Red Mountain and has breathtaking views that overlook Birmingham. Originally built in 1951, The Club has recently undergone a renovation to become more modern and inviting. The renovation finished last month, so you will be one of the first to see the new style!

One Event to Benefit Two Charities

In previous years, we have one beneficiary per event. This year, we are supporting two local non-profits: the March of Dimes and the  American Heart Association. BIIA President, Vickie Fuller, has been personally touched by both organizations, and wants to give back for all the support they have given her family. All proceeds from the will be are donated to these charities, so come out and have fun!

Opportunities to Win Unique Silent Auction Prizes

The board is busy collecting items from around the city for the silent auction. Some items include two tickets to the Alabama Symphony Orchestra performance of your choice, family outing packages to Alabama Splash Adventure, Let’s Play Birmingham and High Point Climbing & Fitness, gift cards for local eateries, scholarships to CIC and CISR courses, overnight stays at Hilton Pensacola Beach and The Lodge at Gulf State Park, trips to Tuscany and Antigua, and much more!

Giveaways, giveaways & more giveaways

There are loads of chances for you to win prizes! Door prizes will be announced throughout the evening. Then, after casino game play, cash your winnings in for tickets for the casino giveaway items. Lastly, someone will walk away with the grand prize of $1,000! In order to win, you must be present, so come and join us!

2018 gala

The Birmingham Independent Insurance Agents association’s annual gala will take place on Friday, January 26 from 6-10pm. The beneficiary of this gala is the American Cancer Society’s Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge.

Hope Lodge provides comfortable lodging to qualifying out of town cancer patients at no cost so they can focus entirely on their treatment. The lodge operates entirely on contributions from donors.

“I selected Hope Lodge as the beneficiary of our upcoming gala to support a program of the American Cancer Society,” said Mark Hughes, President Elect for BIIA. “Like many families, both myself and my wife have family members that have been touched by cancer, some of which at a relatively young age.”

The BIIA Gala event will include dinner and drinks, a silent auction, casino style games, and plenty of door prizes. It will be held at LINC Point–the same location as the 2017 event.

“The event always promises to be a good time, and it definitely fulfills that promise. It is great to socialize with people, enjoy good food and drink, and play games, all while benefitting a worthwhile charity,” said Hughes.

Tickets to the event are $70 for BIIA members and $75 for non-members and can be purchased here. Bulk ticket purchases of 12 and 20 tickets will receive a discounted price.

“We look forward to the support of our members at the 2018 gala so that we can make a meaningful financial contribution to the lodge to help them continue to provide this invaluable service to cancer patients,” said Hughes.

BIIA Serves Guests of Birmingham’s Hope Lodge

Staff and board members of the Birmingham Independent Insurance Agents (BIIA) association recently volunteered at Joe Lee Griffin’s Hope Lodge. The team served dinner, catered through Bellinis Ristorante, to guests of the lodge.

BIIA board members and staff serve dinner to Hope Lodge guests.

“The lodge’s guests were very appreciative and seemed to really enjoy the food. We were able to offer a variety of items to appeal to varying appetites. The white chocolate bread pudding was a favorite of many,” said Mark Hughes, President Elect of BIIA.

Hope Lodge provides comfortable lodging to qualifying out of town cancer patients at no cost so they can focus on their treatment. The lodge operates entirely on contributions from donors.

Mark Hughes and Clint Provost serve dinner to guests of Hope Lodge.

Because the guests of Hope Lodge are responsible for their own meals, the lodge welcomes volunteers to provide dinners to the guests who stay there.

“All of the guests that attended complimented the food and many were able to prepare plates to go for a snack or another meal. Preparing the plates and seeing the guests’ smiling faces really made us feel appreciated and that we helped brighten someone’s day,” said Hughes.

Hope Lodge is the beneficiary of the upcoming 2018 Birmingham Independent Insurance Agents Gala. This is the first time BIIA has volunteered with the non-profit the gala will benefit.

“BIIA has an interest in doing more community service and volunteering in addition to the other traditional activities of the board,” said Hughes. “Serving the dinner allowed several of our board members and staff a first-hand experience at the lodge to learn more about it and actually meet some of the guests. We believe this was a great opportunity for the board to make a difference in addition to monetary contribution we will provide next year. ”

The BIIA Gala benefitting Hope Lodge will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018.

“I selected Hope Lodge as the beneficiary of our upcoming gala to support a program of the American Cancer Society,” said Hughes. “Like many families, both myself and my wife have family members that have been touched by cancer, some of which at a relatively young age. We look forward to the support of our members at the 2018 gala so that we can make a meaningful financial contribution to the lodge to help them continue to provide this invaluable service to cancer patients.”

Anyone with an interest in providing and serving a meal at Hope Lodge can contact Cindy Perdue.

BIIA Donates $20,000 to United Ability

The Birmingham Independent Insurance Agents hosted their Annual Gala at LINCPoint on January 27th, 2017. More than 150 people attended the annual event which included food, music, a silent auction, casino style games and door prizes. All proceeds from the event are donated to a charity at the discretion of the current chapter president.

BIIA President Margaret Ann Pyburn of Cobbs Allen stated United Ability offers many valuable programs that benefit kids and adults in the Birmingham community. She said “I have personally seen the results of their services since my niece has Spina Bifida, so I have a real heart for the work that they do. When asked to select a charity to benefit the Gala, United Ability was an easy choice.”

United Ability CEO, Dr. Gary Edwards shared, “What a tremendous honor to be this year’s recipient of the BIIA gala proceeds. Every dollar received will support the advancement of medicine, technology & therapies for people living with ALL types of disabilities from birth throughout their lives. Thank you, BIIA, for helping transform lives.”

The adults that participate in the Adult Day Program contributed to the festivities by hand painting floral clay pots for centerpieces on the dinner tables.

Recently, representatives from BIIA met representatives at LINCPoint and presented the donation check for $20,000.
