2018 Firefighter of the Year Awarded to Desland James

The 59th annual Firefighter’s Award and Appreciation Luncheon was held on October 11th at the Alabama Independent Insurance Agent’s office. Local firefighters, community members, and politicians showed up to honor the brave men and women who serve our community.

After enjoying a catered lunch, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin spoke and shared personal stories about the impact they have on the community. Afterward, the 2018 Firefighter of the Year Award was announced.

Firefighter Delsand James won the award for his actions from January 27th of this year. After he arrived at an apartment fire which trapped a three-year-old girl, his actions helped to rescue, treat, and save the girl from the fire. The girl along with three others, including a police officer, were taken to the hospital for treatment from smoke inhalation.

Desland James won the 2018 Firefighter of the Year award.

 

James received a monetary prize along with a plaque and his name on the Firefighter of the Year trophy.
